Escape rooms have been popping up all over the world as they gain momentum in popularity.
Escape Rooms have been around since 2006 and Permanent Escape Rooms first opened in Asia and later North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, and South America.
As the popularity of Dungeons and Dragons grew, gamers wanted to feel a more hands-on and immersive experience, thus the formation of gamers dressing up in costume and arming themselves with foam weaponry engaging in life-like scenarios.
If you are a theatre buff or don’t live under a rock, you might be familiar with interactive theatres.
When going to an interactive theatre, guests are encouraged and invited to engage with their environment and take an active role in becoming the character.
So, it’s no surprise that Escape Rooms have become so popular all around the world and more importantly Canada.
The concept of Escape Rooms is that a group of people need to solve a series of puzzles in under an hour to exit the locked room.
Escape Rooms have been in Calgary since 2015, and Calgarian’s now have the luxury to pick between them and choose the best.
Best Escape Rooms in Calgary
1. The Locked Room
This is Calgary’s first Escape Room and they have been refining their rooms since they opened.
They have three locations in Calgary and 12 rooms in total, all completely different.
Rooms range from fun and trendy to full-on walking dead style.
Each room has an escape rating and a difficulty meter. Currently, their hardest room is “Dead Meat” and only has an eight percent escape rate and is the most difficult of the 12.
On the easier scale, the “Forbidden Temple” has a forty-five percent escape rate and requires 4-8 players.
Obviously, the more players you have the more brains you have to figure out the puzzles and combinations to escape.
2. Escape2gether
These Escape Rooms are customized for the ultimate authentic experience possible for players.
They have perfected the puzzles in each room and they all fit well with each theme.
The difficulty ranges from very simple to mind-crunchingly difficult. It’s hard not to overthink the puzzles and if you’ve ever experienced one of their Escape Rooms you know that once you figure them out, it’s silly how much you spent figuring out simple clues.
They have four rooms and they change every couple of months to keep it exciting and new.
3. Escape Capers
Escape Capers is one the most unique Escape Rooms in Calgary.
If you want a flawless experience, then look no further Escape Capers is your place.
They are the only Escape Room where they offer a “hosted” experience.
Hosted rooms mean there is an actor, in character in the room who will give you a limited amount of clues to help you solve the puzzles.
Like other Escape Rooms, you are given hints if you get stuck, but if you run out, keep an eye on what the person does, or says to help you so you don’t get stuck.
The rooms feature a non-linear style, so you can find multiple clues that don’t intertwine with each other, so make sure you keep that in mind when you are figuring out the puzzles.
They have three rooms and all range from intermediate to intermediate plus in difficulty.
4. Level 1 Escape
This is an awesome Escape Room experience if you’re looking for several different types of rooms and difficulties.
You are able to do the rooms with your family, but also come with your friends and be challenged and even a bit freaked out by the realness of the room’s decor.
All puzzles are linear, but that doesn’t mean that all the rooms are confined to just the one, some of the Escape Rooms are multi-room experiences.
You won’t know what room you’re in until your locked out from your group or vice versa.
Success rates range from four to 35 percent.
Breakout Calgary
Breakout Calgary offers three unique rooms all varying in difficulty.
Each room in given 2 hints max, so you better come ready to bring your A-game.
Unlike other Escape Rooms, at Breakout Calgary you are only given 45 minutes to escape the room.
They also feature multi-room experiences and you won’t know which room you’re in until the game starts.
