The “western” twist on traditional Japanese sushi would probably stop some Japanese people in their tracks.
But, that delicious sushi and sashimi can still be found in Calgary along with some pretty cool variations of the classic.
Just sit back and hold on tight because if you’re in the mood for some sushi, it might be hard to make it to the end of this post!
Best Sushi Spots in Calgary
Sushi Bar Zipang
It’s been rated number one of “top sushi” places in Calgary by Avenue Magazine.
If you’re looking for some traditional Japanese sushi that includes sashimi and nigiri, they have an extensive list that would please any sushi connoisseur.
Hot-spot in the heart of Bridgeland, fan favorites are the maki rolls and yakitori, just call in advance because this place is sure to please and packs the house with customers.
Blowfish
If you’re looking for an upscale restaurant with a lounge-like atmosphere, look no further!
This is a great spot for a weekend date night or for an awesome outing with the ladies.
If you are familiar or accustomed to traditional Japanese food, go for the “Omakase”, a five-course chef-selected experience.
Kinjo
A known “chain” sushi hot spot in Calgary, that is less chain and more delicious where you can find one in almost every quadrant of the city.
Always fresh, with staff that are ready to please and will whip up crowd-pleasers in no time.
They have the classic rolls, but to switch it up a bit, try the Las Vegas roll or feel like you’re really in Cow-Town with the “Alberta roll” (Sushi rice, teriyaki beef, yellow daikon, cucumber, and lettuce topped with sesame seeds and served with steak sauce on the top).
Kinjo also offers sushi making classes, so you too, can perfect the dynamite roll!
Zen
This little find is in the heart of downtown and the perfect place for a mid-week corporate lunch or a sneaky little lunch date.
They are committed to fresh fish, even flying in fish from Maritimes and Tokyo on a daily basis.
They have recently expanded into Cowboys Casion as Zen 8 and you know the atmosphere is a ton of fun and always full of action.
Like Kinjo, they also offer sushi-making classes at their Zen 8 location.
They are open late- until 2:30 am weekends and 11 pm on weekdays, so you know it’s a perfect place for a late-night date or snack craving!
Sushi Hiro
Is it any surprise that the guy who owns this sushi restaurant is named Hiro?
And, don’t be surprised if you see Hiro himself rolling your sushi behind the counter.
If you’re looking for a truly authentic sushi experience, then this is a no brainer to check out.
Hiro and his family own the business and they have some pretty awesome ways of doing things.
If you want to put your stomach in the very capable hands of Hiro himself, instead of asking for a menu, just ask to be fed until your full.
Don’t worry, Hiro and the gang will take care of you and you’ll be able to try some truly unique combos you would have never tried before!
Globefish
Offering three different locations in Calgary, some have said that the Globefish in Mardaloop may be the best.
They have fresh sashimi but clear fan favorites are the rolls.
Some crowd-pleasers are the rocky mountain roll, crunch munch roll, and the crazy buster roll.
They also offer brown rice substitutes that many sushi places can’t compete with.
